What's the answer to a shrinking workforce? Creative thinking about untapped workforce talent.

As the workforce shrinks, an increasing number of employers in the New York metropolitan area are asking Women@Work to identify candidates for permanent full-time and part-time positions, consulting projects and temporary assignments. Employers are realizing that the returning professional women in our network are an untapped and hard-to-find resource-and they are witnessing the overall recruiting power of our network. In a very short time, both current and returning professional women spread the word about Women@Work job postings and help to identify high caliber candidates that would never be found through typical online, newspaper or agency avenues.

Employers can no longer stand by and watch talented women leave the work force. Women are already an underutilized resource-and their presence in the mid to senior-level ranks is increasingly critical. By 2017, the U.S. will see a shortfall of 12 million college-educated workers. At that time 18 million jobs will require college-educated workers, but the declining number of college graduates will not support that need. Further compounding the problem is the fact that over the next 15 years there will be a 15% decline in the number of 35 to 44-year-olds (traditionally the hottest demographic target for new workforce talent)--and one-fifth of large, established U.S. companies will lose 40% or more of their top-level talent just within the next five years.

One of the fastest-growing workforce demographics is 45 to 64-year-olds-and the current and returning professional women in our network are in or nearing that demographic. No other recruiting firm is wholly focused on high caliber women who not only very ably fill hiring gaps, but also help employers fulfill diversity initiatives.

As the workforce shrinks and top candidates have an array of companies to choose from, the most attractive employers will not necessarily be those offering high salaries, fancy titles or robust benefit plans. The most sought after employment package feature is now, and will continue to be the opportunity for work-life balance and flexibility. Successful mid to senior level women know all about climbing the corporate ladder-they worried about salary, titles and prestige in their 20s. In their 40s they want work-life balance. The most enlightened employers are strategizing now about flexibility initiatives so that they will always attract the best and most plentiful talent.
